If the tissue is to be closed without traumatising the individual layers, soft-grip clamps are used. Their jaws are designed so that the stainless steel yields elastically when they are closed, exerting slight but sufficient pressure.
The longitudinal serrations distribute the pressure evenly and prevent lateral slippage.
